Project Overview
About the ShelterBox Digital Volunteer Experience
As Product Manager for Team Bash, I led the development of a comprehensive digital volunteer platform for ShelterBox, a disaster relief organization. The project addresses the critical challenge of volunteer retention and engagement through innovative community-building features and user-centric design.
ShelterBox provides emergency shelter and essential items to families affected by disasters worldwide. However, they faced significant challenges in maintaining volunteer engagement and retention, particularly among their Canadian operations with only 4 full-time staff members managing a growing volunteer network.
Our solution focuses on creating a dynamic, user-centric volunteer portal that revolutionizes how ShelterBox engages with its volunteers through social interactions, community building, gamified incentives, and real-time communication tools.
Key Project Achievements
- Comprehensive User Research: Conducted extensive user research and heuristic evaluation of existing volunteer portal
- Product-Led Growth Strategy: Developed PLG framework with three distinct flywheel models for volunteer acquisition and retention
- Prototype Development: Created high-fidelity WordPress-based prototype with community features and gamification
- Market Scaling Plan: Formulated detailed go-to-market strategy with expansion through NGO partnerships
- Leadership Framework: Established four orchestrated leadership principles for organizational transformation
